Long Weekend Pt 3. - Namsan Tower
04:02 Fri 19th May 2006 (GMT +9 Seoul)
I'm running about a week and a half behind in updates, but better than never right. The last day of my long weekend was probably one of the most beautiful, cleanest and clearest days here in Korea. Absolutely every detail of the mountains, buildings, and every other aspect of the city could be made out - something that doesn't happen too often due to the dull haze that looms daily over they city. With such a day in front of me there was no time to waste.
Like every other large city in the world Seoul also has a phallic symbol. Namsan Tower located right in the middle of Seoul City itself stands 497 meters, giving a 360 degree view of its surroundings. I have been waiting over 2 years for the perfect day to head up the tower and take some photos and it had finally come.
It wouldn't be an adventure without people to enjoy it so Dee, Chris and myself made the mish into Seoul and up the tower after a leisurely walk in the surrounding park to arrive at the top just as the sun was setting. Now I realize after living here and traveling weekly into different parts of the city that Seoul is big and it takes over 2 hours by subway to go from North to South, but seeing it from above for the first time in all its glory is something I won't forget any time soon. I have been up the tower in good old Auckland, Las Vagas, the Empire State Building in New York, but nothing so far has compared to the immense size of this city.
There were buildings for as far as the eye could see and that is indeed a long way at 497 meters high.
I consider myself here in Bucheon part of Seoul as we are on the subway line and it only takes 30 min to get travel in, but I could only make out the direction of where I lived. Turning north to Uijeongbu where I lived last year, all I could make out were the surrounding mountains. Needless to say it is an impressive sight.
Although photos never capture what the eye sees I reeled off that give you some idea of the sheer hugeness of the city.
Enjoy
